On average the fee charged by most recruitment firms to secure SMEs the right employee is anywhere between 18% and 23%. In some capital cities the rates can be as high as 30%. In our view it’s unsustainable and a reason why many SMEs undertake the recruitment process themselves. So what sets us apart?
A recruitment model that makes sense
We’ve had a lot of experience recruiting. Some of our people including our CEO have been in charge of large SMEs with a strong need to recruit staff at all levels on a constant basis. In our view the current recruitment model for SMEs isn’t necessarily broken, but it’s not sustainable. We have some distinct points of difference that we believe makes the recruitment process for SMEs more affordable and more enjoyable. They are highlighted below in our recruitment tree.
So why have we gone down this road?
Selection Criteria - We’ve all been there. We see a job we like and the first thing we are asked to do is fill in a lengthy selection criteria. It’s a time consuming process with recruiters arguing it screens out those not really interested. BUT what about those candidates who are perfect for the role, who just can’t be bothered spending the time addressing a dozen plus stupid pro-forma questions? Under our model we only ask those who we short-list to complete a selection - at least then they know we are NOT wasting their time.
We don’t and never will, hide behind an email. Regardless of the nature and seniority of the role those who have taken the time to apply, potentially complete a selection criteria and attend an interview, will be called personally by us to inform them that they have been unsuccessful and afforded an explanation why. We know of examples where CEO candidates have flown or travelled 12 hours for an interview and then sent an email from the recruiter saying they missed out. It’s unprofessional and will never happen with us.
How many times have you received an email from a recruiter to say you haven’t been shortlisted but they’ll keep your CV on file and get back to you when another opportunity presents it’s self? How many get back to you? From our collective experience we know of a few times it has happened in the last ten years. One of the most powerful tools we have at SMEA is our candidate recruitment database. When a client approaches us, the first place we go is there. Hence, if you have applied for a role through SMEA, expect a call from us because we really do get back to you. It saves us and our client time and money so why wouldn’t we.

We don’t have a one size fits all policy for SMEs like most recruitment agents. If we deliver you exactly what you need, in half the time it would normally take, then we only charge you half the fee. It’s called being fair and proves yet again our committment to SMEs.
